DIY Desk: The Final Product

DIY Desk: The Final Product

Hey Lovelies, I FINALLY finished one of many projects that I had in mind for my bedroom, a desk.

I had a small desk in college that I updated by sanding it down and adding some paint to bring it back to life, but after 5 years of lots of love, wear, and tear I decided that I needed an upgrade, the sad thing is that most desks that I loved, well lets just say the price tag didn’t love my wallet as much.

For Example:

Which is when I got the idea to make my own and as it turns out, not only is it inexpensive, but also really functional.

First, was the inspiration for my desk. I knew I wanted something light weight  and sleek looking so that it would work with other spaces if I decided to change my space (which I tend to do quite often!) I stumble on this design by Mr. Kate and LOVED the idea, but instead of using it for the kitchen as a kitchen island I decided to us it for my desk.

Then, I went on the hunt for hairpin legs. I found super inexpensive ones from Wayfair they were on sale for only $34, which is a really great price! Those will be linked here: Wayfair Georgianna Hairpin Legs.

There are 6 different sizes to choose from, for different project, maybe you need a coffee table instead of a desk or extra space in the kitchen…

After, my dad and I went to Home Depot and we bought red oak plywood which was so big that we had extra left over and we used it for another project at my parents house. Honestly, the project was so fast and easy to do, the only time that I needed help was when I was cutting the wood. Either then that it was a one man’s (or in my case, woman’s) job.

Finally, we cut wood to place underneath the table that way it wouldn’t sink it and would be able to withhold weight. Before adding the legs I placed a thin wood primer and a wood stain on top and I purchase both those things along with a paint brush at HomeDepot.

In total the price of this project was:  $112.02

Wayfair Georgianna Hairpin Legs: $34.00

Home Depot wood: $54.98

Sand paper: $ 4.34

Wood Conditioner: $ 6.22 (Varathane Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner)

Brush: $8.00 (I don’t remember the exact brush, but it was around this price point and honestly any painting brush would do.)

Wood Stain: $4.48 (it was an 8 oz tin and it’s from the brand Varathane in the color Gunstock. We had left over to use on other projects around the house.)

Which in my opinion is a really good deal for the amount of desk space that I am getting when most desks cost double or sometimes even triple the price that I paid. As you can tell from examples above.

It holds so much stuff on top. I was able to fit my printer on the corner and ALL my colorful pens that I own and also had enough space to have books on display and enough space to have a writing section. In the future I would love to purchase a desktop and I feel like this desk is going to work really well with me because I’ll still have enough space to fit notebooks, books, and so much pens etc.

If you try out a desk, a coffee table, a dinning room table, or anything like that, show me your creations on social media by tagging me @candidlyyadi I would love to see how yours turned out.
