Hello Gents and Ladies!
I’m back after being away for a few weeks and with the Black Lives Movement it felt right to use this platform that I have to show my support. If you follow me on my Instagram, I have been posting on my stories links to petitions that need to be signed. Please sign them, they take about 5 min at most and they don’t cost a penny. But also, if you are able to donate, please do, even the smallest amount makes a big difference.
For this blog post, I did a bit of research and made a list of some black owned clothing sites, art, bloggers, documentaries and books. It can feel like we don’t have a lot of power because we don’t live in major cities that are protesting, but with the power of the internet we can make a difference no matter where we are and I think it’s great that we are seeing everyones support for the movement and I am hopeful that it can translate to real change in our society for laws to be in place to protect black lives because as a society we have fell them for so long. We can see 2020 not as a year of tragedy but as a year filled with growth and moving forwards.
Books
01. So You Want To Talk About Race by Ijeoma Ollie
I always think that one of the best things that we have in this world is our education, being able to read books and educate ourselves. This book is on my reading list it helps us as someone who is non-black to help us educate ourselves on privileges that we might not thought we had and we take for granted.
02. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
I’ve seen this book a couple of times while looking for new books to read and I knew it was going to be a film so now I want to read the book before I watch the film. It’s about a 16 year old girl who witnesses the death of her best friend by a police officer and the story follows her journey as she tries to make sense of her world.
Film – Documentaries
13th on Netflix
I learned so much from this documentary that posed so many questions for me. For Instance, I am 25 years old, I attended college and majored in History and not once in high school or college or any time during my education did I learned that Correctional Facilities and some Prisons are privately owned corporations WHAT?! My question is, why didn’t we get thought this at schools? This documentary focuses on how prisons have become the new way to enslave black lives. That the majority of people in prison are black males.
When they see us on Netflix
This one has been on my list for a while and I will be watching it tonight. It’s a story about 5 black man being wrongfully accused of raping a woman in 1989 and it’s based on a true-story of how they were framed and years later they found out the truth. They also have a whole Black Lives Matter series on Netflix that is great to educate ourselves.
Art
@Blackartistspace
It’s a site online that has various black artists and it’s a great place to support black artists and also get exposed to multiple artists. For me, art is a form of expression and this year I started painting more and I think it’s really cool that there is a platform that supports that creative expression and from various artists and we can find people that inspire us.
@gayfrida
Okay, so this one is not a black owned art print, but my friend is super talented and he does art pieces and all of the proceeds are going to the black lives matter. He has 5 series of art pieces that he is going to do and if you are interested follow his account so you can get the details.
Fashion
I found this site called @wearekin and I like the simple styles that they have and the simple colors because that is more my style and I really like that they are sustainable and responsible manufactures.
Also, while in my search for books, artists, and black businesses to support I found this life style blogger Kristabel Plummer and her lifestyle blog called “I want you to know” She did a way more in depth guide on 17 black business to support. I highly recommend you check it out and while you are at it, check out her blog which I definitely have and I’m excited to follow her journey.
Let me know, was this list helpful? Are there any other black owned businesses that you like and want to share with others? comment them down below so everyone can see them!
