Okay, so I’ve always been low key jealous of girls with naturally long locks. Their hair looks like it can belong in a Repunzel fairy tale.
What I have been dealing with is fine and flat hair and although having fine hair has its perks like feeling silky soft when it is straightened or staying straight for days I also have to deal with flat hair that needs a little extra TLC.
From my mom’s side of the family, we have very fine hair and less of it too.
My dad, on the other hand, is the complete opposite he along with my brother has thick curly hair and lots of it. Let’s just say I didn’t get the greatest side on this end of the stick.
Growing up with thin fine hair made my mom and me try everything we can get our hands on. Here are a few things that I have learned about managing and styling fine hair.
01. Keep it short
Fine hair tends to get tangle really easily. And although I love long hair, having shorter hair is easier to manage and it also gives the illusion of looking fuller. So next time you are with your hair stylist ask for a shorter due and ask for some layers as well because layers add body to the hair giving the illusion of fuller hair.
02. Use the right hair brush
Talking about tangle hair. Something that I have learned helps so much with detangling my hair without getting rid of half of it is the hairbrush. I personally us a tangle teaser and it is honestly such a great investment. I used to use a wide tooth comb which also works good, but I feel like I yank my hair more with a wide tooth comb.
03. Shampoo
I try to switch up the products that I use often so that my hair doesn’t get used to it and gives me results. Which is why I have been lovely lately this shampoo by Herbal Essences it has green tree and cucumber and it’s super refreshing especially during the warm weather. My hair feels so clean afterward. Plus, I have been suffering from dandruff for a while and I feel like this helps tremendously in cooling my scalp and I don’t have dandruff as much.
04. Conditioner
I have the beauty and planet conditioner. Which is specifically made for fine hair, I love the scent. I really want to try the other products. Not only are they made out of mostly natural products. It makes my hair smell great and it makes it feel super soft. I’m going back to this as soon as I finish this bottle, that’s how much I love it! And while I’m at it, I’ll also be trying the shampoo.
05. Hair Mask
I like to do a hair mask once a week. I’m trying to do hair masks more often because when I do use one it not only makes my hair feel super soft and healthy, but there are inexpensive ones that you can make at home. Two of my to-go hair masks are coconut oil and egg hair masks. They are both inexpensive and healthy ways to treat your hair.
06. Cut down on Heat
If you have fine hair like myself, try cutting down on heat styling. Because my hair is so fine, I like to put it up in braids and then let it loose the next day and it creates natural waves. I also like to let it air dry. My blow dryer broke, which is forcing me to let my hair dry off naturally and it feels soft and healthy afterward.
07. Use heat protectant
Okay, I know asking you to get off heat all together is not going to be exactly realistic. I’ve tried it myself. So, when you are using heat make sure that you are using a heat protectant. This one by Tresemme is inexpensive and it smells great and is great for detangling my hair too when I need it.
